Singapore - Day 1

Our Lunar New Year holiday started with a day and a half in Singapore.  Singapore is 85 miles north of the equator and the temperature stays around 85, but the humidity was at 100% for a long part of our trip (rain and high humidity).

We flew Singapore Airlines, and we would fly with them again in a heartbeat.  They were the nicest people, the food was good and there was anything you wanted to watch in terms of entertainment (even in coach).  I tried to take a picture of the flight attendants, but was unsuccessful - so here is a shot of the welcome screen.

We arrived on Sunday afternoon and had a great cab ride to the hotel on Orchard Road.  The cab driver pointed out everything there was to see on the trip over in perfect English - big difference from HK.

We walked around the shops on Orchard Road and window shopped - could not afford to really shop here (Think Rodeo Drive).  Then we were picked up for the Night Safari around 6pm.  Singapore has one of three zoos in the world known for not caging their animals - they use natural barriers to contain the animals - moats, fences, etc.  There is a day zoo and a night safari with different animals based on their natural habitats.  This was the first night of the holiday and apparently a lot of other people decided to go to the zoo also - the queue was over an hour long.  To tour the safari you ride in a tram with a guide pointing out animals on both sides.  The catch to all this was "no flash photography allowed" - so I tried to take one picture with out a flash and then gave up.

Zebra tram next to ours in the loading area.
Here are the flamingos (no flash photography... from a moving tram)

Thumbuakar Show - fire eating stunt

Dragon parade

Year of the Snake - he looks so friendly.
We road the coach back to the hotel and found dinner on the street right next to the hotel at a hawker area.  Singapore is know for their amazing street food - cheap and good.
Here is the hawker center where we ate.

Me and a big Tiger beer.  We ordered 2 without realizing how big they were - we slept well

Patrick's dinner - Chili Stingray with rice.

Gwen's dinner - Tom Yum Soup
Tomorrow we see more of Singapore via Bicycle.
